A day off with sun meant a trip to the sea,
An hour by train, no seat for me,
Countryside outside went whizzing by,
Buckets, spades and picnics filled bags nearby.
Joining the masses to parade down to the shore,
The city slickers arrived as the locals frowned and swore,
Bumping our way to the pier, nudging through the crowd,
The sea was not visible through the fog and cloud.
With games galore, and fun rides too,
We were kept entertained until the sun shone through,
Then it was back to the beach and the pin striped chairs,
But we couldn’t sit in them as they came with a fare.
The pebbled beach made do as we watched the boats,
And ate our fishnchips to keep us afloat,
But the ocean was freezing and a toe dip sufficed,
Before it was back to the shops where the gelatos looked nice.
Making like tourists we strolled the quaint seaside streets,
Where the food looked delicious and the road was covered in seats,
We giggled at the odd-sorts and soaked up the lasting sun,
Ogling the odd outfits and hairstyles of some.
Then it was back to the station where we said our goodbye,
Promising to be back and escape the polluted big city sky,
Speeding back towards home after a day of fun,
With freckled skin and sunburnt cheeks, the lasting remnants of the beautiful sun.
